LIVE: Canelo vs. Munguia for undisputed super middleweight title

In what will be his 25th world title fight, Mexican icon Canelo Alvarez defends his undisputed super middleweight championship this Cinco de Mayo weekend against compatriot Jaime Munguia at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on May 4. The 12-round bout, plus undercard action, will be broadcast by Prime Video and DAZN.

A four-weight world champion, Canelo (60-2-2, 39 KOs) has been a pound-for-pound entrant for over a decade. The 33-year-old boxer-puncher has the finest resume in elite-level boxing, having posted victories over Austin Trout, Erislandy Lara, Miguel Cotto, Gennadiy Golovkin, Daniel Jacobs and Sergey Kovalev.

Munguia (43-0, 34 KOs) cannot match his opponent for experience or accomplishments. However, at 27 he has youth on his side, punching power, durability and his ambition is visceral. Not a stranger to world-level action, Munguia once held the WBO super welterweight crown and made five defenses in 14 months.

Will Canelo add another big name to his record, or will there be a changing of the guard?

The Sporting News will provide live coverage from the full card in Las Vegas and round-by-round scoring for the main event.

09:26 p.m. ET: Immediately after landing a nice right hook lead in round one, Magdaleno clashes heads with Figueroa and suffers a nasty cut over his left eye.

09:16 p.m. ET: Next up is Brandon Figueroa versus Jessie Magdaleno. The former super bantamweight champs collide at featherweight with Figueroa defending the WBC interim title.

09:00 p.m. ET: We’re in the final round and both men are exchanging at ring center. Stanionis would appear to have the edge, but this has been an entertaining contest from start to finish.

08:45 p.m. ET: Despite still having his moments, there’s evidence that Maestre is slowing down. Stanionis’ punches are moving the Venezuelan a bit more now in the eighth round.

08:26 p.m. ET: Good action fight. Stanionis effective on the front foot while Maestre doing very well on the counter. Neither fighter has a decided edge right now.

08:11 p.m. ET: The first fight of the main card is about to get underway. Two unbeaten fighters, Eimantas Stanionis and Gabriel Maestre, collide for the former’s WBA “regular” welterweight title.

6:00 p.m. ET: Hello and welcome to The Sporting News’ live coverage of Canelo Alvarez’s all-Mexican Cinco de Mayo showdown with undefeated challenger Jaime Munguia. All the marbles at 168 pounds are on the line.

The PPV main card starts at 8 p.m. ET. Canelo and Munguia should make their way to the ring around 11:15 p.m. ET, depending on how long the undercard fights last.
