Latest Lakers coaching rumors after Darvin Ham firing

The Lakers find themselves in a familiar position this spring: searching for a head coach.

Los Angeles coaching searches in 2016, 2019 and 2022 brought mixed results. Luke Walton’s tenure in Los Angeles wasn’t viewed as a success. And while Frank Vogel won a championship in the 2020 bubble, he didn’t come close to recapturing the same success in the following two seasons.

Darvin Ham lasted just two years.

His tenure ended in
a first-round loss to the Nuggets

after the Lakers took too long to recover from a slow start to the season.

No Lakers head coach has lasted more than three seasons since the legendary Phil Jackson, who retired in 2011. The Lakers job is as high-profile as any in the NBA, but Ham, Vogel and Walton can tell you that comes with a downside. Los Angeles’ next head coach will likely be tasked with competing for a championship with LeBron James, who turns 40 in December.

Here are the latest rumors surrounding the Lakers’ head coaching vacancy.

Could Bronny James join LeBron James on the Lakers?

Timberwolves’ Micah Nori also in mix for Lakers

Timberwolves assistant Micah Nori and Nuggets assistant David Adelman are both candidates for the Lakers’ opening, The Athletic’s Jovan Buha reported.

Nori has raised his profile over the last week as Chris Finch’s right-hand man in Minnesota while Finch is laid up with a
torn patellar tendon

. Nori, who has 15 years of experience as an NBA assistant coach, has been handling physical duties such as calling timeouts during the Timberwolves’ series against the Nuggets.

Adelman was first reported as a candidate earlier in the week. The 42-year-old spent the last seven seasons on Michael Malone’s staff in Denver, where the Nuggets crafted a team that has dominated the Lakers over the last two years.

Nori and Adelman join JJ Redick, Kenny Atkinson and James Borrego as candidates reported to be in the mix for the Lakers.

Tyronn Lue, JJ Redick at center of Lakers’ search

Tyronn Lue and JJ Redick are primary targets of the Lakers’ coaching search, according to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin.

Redick was already known to be in the mix for Los Angeles despite his lack of coaching experience, but Lue is a notable name given speculation connecting him to the Lakers appeared to die off when it was reported the Clippers planned to extend him. Until Lue is extended, McMenamin told the “Rich Eisen Show,” the Clippers coach “will remain a person of interest for the Lakers.”

Lue has spent the last four seasons coaching the Clippers, but he notably was James’ coach in Cleveland when the Cavaliers won the NBA Finals in 2016. Lue coached James for parts of three seasons, and the Lakers were known to have interest in him after they fired Walton in 2019.

JJ Redick, Kenny Atkinson among candidates set to interview with Lakers

JJ Redick, Kenny Atkinson, David Adelman and James Borrego are poised to interview for the Lakers’ head coaching job, The Athletic’s Shams Charania told ESPN’s “The Pat McAfee Show.”

Atkinson and Borrego have head coaching experience, but the report notably confirms that
Redick is very much in the mix for Los Angeles

A former player with no coaching experience, Redick has crafted a career in the media and drawn plenty of praise for his basketball insight. He also has a strong relationship with James, though coaching the NBA legend would be an interesting dynamic with Redick only six months older.
