How Arsenal can still win the Premier League

The 2023/24 Premier League title race
will go to the wire.

Arsenal’s narrow victory over Manchester United
ensured Manchester City cannot be crowned champions before matchday 38, regardless of the result in their rearranged game away to Tottenham
on May 14.

The Gunners fell short a few weeks out from the final day last year, but now they are still very much in the race to be crowned champions for the first time in two decades
. Much will depend on City’s result against Spurs and how the top two’s matches play out on Sunday, when both sides will have the benefit of playing in front of their home fans against teams with relatively little left at stake.

City may hold a slight advantage given they have a game in hand, but it’s Arsenal who began the week at the top of the standings. So, what do they need to happen to win the title for the first time since since Arsene Wenger’s ‘Invincibles’? The Sporting News runs through the permutations below.

With one match left to play in their 2023/24 Premier League campaign, it is still possible for Arsenal to end the season as champions.

Their 1-0 win over Manchester United move them back to the top of the table
, a point ahead of Manchester City. Crucially, Pep Guardiola’s team still have two games to play, which means the title race is presently out of the Gunners’ control.

*Standings correct as of Monday, May 13

City’s next game is away to Tottenham on May 14. The result of that match will be critical.

If Tottenham beat Man City, Arsenal will be a point clear at the top on the final day of the season. They will then know that, if they win their game at home to Everton, or if Man City do not beat West Ham at the Etihad Stadium, Arsenal will be champions.

If Man City beat Tottenham, Guardiola’s men will be two points clear at the top for the final day. A win over West Ham would then ensure City win the league. If City draw with West Ham and Arsenal beat Everton, the top two would be level on 89 points, and the title race would come down to goal difference
. At the moment, Arsenal have the edge there.

If Man City and Tottenham draw, Arsenal will be top of the table on goal difference ahead of the last round of matches. It would then come down to who gets the better result on the final day. If Arsenal and City match each other’s results and therefore finish the season level on points, then whoever has the better goal difference will win the title. At the moment, that’s Arsenal, but the gap is only three goals, so there’s a chance City could win by a big enough margin to overtake the Gunners in that category.

If both teams finish on the same number of points, and the same goal difference, the team with the most goals scored will be champions. That is likely to be Man City, given they have two games left and have already scored more than Arsenal. However, if the teams are level on points, goal difference and goals scored, then Arsenal will win the league, as the tie-breaker in that scenario is the results this season between the top two (Arsenal beat City 1-0 at home and drew 0-0 at the Etihad Stadium).

The 2023/24 Premier League season concludes on Sunday, May 19. In the interest of fairness, all 10 matches kick off at the same time: 4 p.m. BST (11 a.m. ET).
