Arsenal’s remaining schedule in Premier League title chase

0

Arsenal are proving that last season’s surprise title challenge was not a fluke: they are firmly in the race to win the Premier League for the first time in two decades.

The Gunners have been in exceptional form since the turn of the year and headed into the final 10 games fractionally ahead of Liverpool and Manchester City at the top of the table, while their recent scoring prowess has boosted their goal difference to a healthier state than that of their closest rivals.

Memories of last season will be difficult to shake off. Mikel Arteta’s side were enjoying a proud position as league leaders until their form fell away in the decisive weeks of the season, a run of two wins in eight games across April and May ultimately allowing City to claim the trophy. Arteta and his players have certainly looked in a confident mood heading into the business end of 2023/24, though.

Here, The Sporting News has a breakdown of Arsenal’s remaining schedule, plus a points prediction for the games they have coming up, based on this season’s form and the result in the same game in 2022/23. Could this be the year they finally get their hands on the trophy for the first time since the ‘Invincibles’ of 2004?

Arsenal have got five games left in the 2023/24 Premier League season. Three of them are at home at Emirates Stadium, and three are away matches.

Arsenal have some local derby matches still to come, plus a trip to Manchester United on the penultimate day. Here’s a run-down of those fixtures, and a prediction of how many points they might expect to get.

A repeat of Arsenal’s 4-1 thrashing at a similar stage of last season always felt highly unlikely. City dominated possession but there were very few chances to speak of throughout a game that was hardly a classic.

Result last season: Man City 4-1 Arsenal
Prediction this season: Man City 2-2 Arsenal
Final score: Man City 0-0 Arsenal

Luton have put up a commendable fight in their first Premier League season, but this ended up being a routine home win for a rotated Gunners line-up after captain Martin Odegaard opened the scoring

Result last season: N/A
Prediction this season: Arsenal 4-1 Luton Town
Final score: Arsenal 2-0 Luton Town

In perhaps their most commanding performance of 2024, the Gunners cruised to victory on the south coast. Saka dispatched from the spot to give Arsenal the lead before Havertz doubled it later in the second half. Trossard then rubbed salt in Brighton’s wounds as he cutely chipped home to make it three.

Result last season: Brighton 2-4 Arsenal
Prediction this season: Brighton 0-3 Arsenal
Final score: Brighton 0-3 Arsenal

We had this as a draw given Villa’s need to earn points in the Champions League race and due to their performance against some of the big sides this season in previous games. But this was a truly outstanding display that left Arsenal stunned.

Result last season: Arsenal 2-1 Aston Villa
Prediction this season: Arsenal 1-1 Aston Villa
Final score: Arsenal 0-2 Aston Vila

While it wasn’t as convincing as last season, Arsenal got the job done in the Midlands as they bounced back from Champions League disappointment in the middle of the week. Trossard poked the Gunners ahead moments before half-time and Odegaard secured the three points in injury time with a tidy finish.

Result last season: Wolves 0-2 Arsenal
Prediction this season: Wolves 0-2 Arsenal
Final score: Wolves 0-2 Arsenal

Arsenal beat Chelsea comfortably at home last season, and things have not exactly gone great for Mauricio Pochettino’s Blues in 2023/24. However, a traditionally high-scoring derby game like this has the potential to see the Gunners slip up.

Result last season: Arsenal 3-1 Chelsea
Prediction this season: Arsenal 2-2 Chelsea

The big one — and perhaps the day Arsenal’s title challenge ends. Spurs will be fighting for the top four at this stage, making three points hugely valuable, and they would love nothing better than to deal irreparable damage to their north London rivals’ trophy hopes.

Result last season: Tottenham 0-2 Arsenal
Prediction this season: Tottenham 2-1 Arsenal

Bournemouth lost this game last season thanks to Reiss Nelson’s 97th-minute winner. The Cherries are a more rounded side these days, but it’s tough to see them leaving the Emirates with anything to show for their efforts.

Result last season: Arsenal 3-2 Bournemouth
Prediction this season: Arsenal 2-0 Bournemouth

United have a strong home record against Arsenal in the Premier League era, but this has been a desperately challenging season under Erik ten Hag. They could well be out of the running for the Champions League places by this point, which would mean further uncertainty around the manager. Arsenal should be too good for them.

Result last season: Man United 3-1 Arsenal
Prediction this season: Man United 1-2 Arsenal

Everton could still be playing for survival come the final day and will likely throw everything they have at the Gunners. Arteta’s men should still outscore them.

Result last season: Arsenal 4-0 Everton
Prediction this season: Arsenal 3-2 Everton

Based on our predicted results, Man City will finish top of the Premier League this season, five points above Arsenal and six clear of Liverpool.

It’ll be fascinating to see how this title battle plays out in real time…
