Can Liverpool still win the Premier League?

0

Liverpool began 2024 with the possibility of a quadruple of trophies to come in Jurgen Klopp’s final months in charge of the club. Now, it looks like being a little less of a famous farewell.

The Reds won the Carabao Cup final against Chelsea in February, but their hopes of another piece of silverware in 2023/24 appear slim. They were eliminated from the FA Cup after a thrilling 4-3 defeat to fierce rivals Manchester United, while their UEFA Europa League campaign ended in a quarterfinal exit at the hands of Atalanta.

Recent results in the Premier League, particularly that 2-0 Merseyside derby defeat to Everton, mean those scenes of celebration at Wembley Stadium on February 25 look like being the high point of Klopp’s last season at Anfield.

What do Liverpool need to happen between now and May 19 to keep their Premier League title hopes alive? Is it even still possible for them to beat Arsenal and Manchester City in this engrossing title race? The Sporting News runs through the details.

MORE: How Liverpool’s remaining schedule looks in 2023/24 Premier League season

At the beginning of matchday 35, it is still possible for Liverpool to win the Premier League in 2023/24.

They can finish the season with a maximum of 86 points, provided that they win their remaining matches. That would be enough to win the title if Arsenal and Manchester City results also go the Reds’ way.

Assuming Liverpool win their last four games, they will also require Arsenal to drop at least three points from a possible 12 remaining if they are to finish above the Gunners (and they could also need a sizeable swing in goal difference). They would also need Man City to take no more than 10 points from a possible 15 remaining. If these things happen, Liverpool can finish as champions.

If Liverpool fail to win their next two league games, they could be mathematically out of the title race, depending on City and Arsenal’s results.

After 34 matches, Liverpool sit third in the Premier League table, three points behind leaders Arsenal — who have played the same number of games — and two points behind Manchester City.

Pep Guardiola’s team have a game in hand on their title rivals; if they win that outstanding match, they will move top of the table, two points above the Gunners and five clear of Liverpool.
