Gauff cruises into Aus Open third round after early scare

0

Coco Gauff said it all after her Australian Open second-round win against compatriot Caroline Dolehide: “Look good, feel good.”

Looking relaxed while she plugged her New Balance outfit, the fourth seed certainly was more stressed against Dolehide, who she overcame 7-6(2) 6-2 in one hour, 44 minutes.

Gauff will face another U.S competitor in the third round – Alycia Parks – who upset 32nd-seed Leylah Fernandez in the second round.

It looked like a regulation win was coming for Gauff as she raced to a 4-1 lead with a break in the first set.

But the 19-year-old relaxed and allowed her opponent back into the game with Dolehide securing two breaks to serve for the set at 5-6.

However, Gauff broke back to force the tiebreaker before steamrolling Dolehide in the set decider.

Games were on serve through the first four games of the second set but it was only a matter of time until Gauff asserted her authority.

After 2-2 in the second set, Gauff didn’t lose another game for the rest of the match as she won the set 6-2.

Gauff has never played her next opponent Parks, but will go into the third-round match as hot favourite.

Sixteenth-seed Caroline Garcia looms for Gauff in the fourth round, while eighth-seed Maria Sakkai could be her quarters match-up.
