Breaking down the entire Devin Haney vs. Ryan Garcia undercard

0

Who will walk out as the WBC super lightweight champion when Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia face off at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on April 20? The super fight will be available on DAZN worldwide.

Haney (31-0) has held gold since 2019 when he beat Zaur Abdullaev for the interim WBC lightweight belt. Eventually promoted to full-time status, he fought George Kambosos Jr. in Australia in June 2022, beating the Aussie to win the WBA, IBF, WBO, and Ring belts to become the undisputed champion — following up with a repeat in a rematch against Kambosos four months later, when he again won by decision.

Another victory via the cards over highly regarded Vasiliy Lomachenko improved his pedigree, and after his successful lightweight reign, the 25-year-old moved up in weight last December.

He looked slick in beating Regis Prograis to win the WBC super lightweight title thanks to sheer weight of punches, but Garcia (24-1) is another challenge.

The 15-time US National amateur champion has been making waves since an impressive TKO win against Luke Campbell in 2021, knocking the Englishman down after getting floored early.

“KingRy” couldn’t handle the power to the body of Gervonta “Tank” Davis in their April 2023 super fight, but with a new trainer in tow, he answered question marks about his ceiling in December with an eighth-round knockout of Oscar Duarte.

This one has the potential to be an edge-of-the-seat affair — and there is plenty of bad blood between these two following a controversial, and at times bizarre, build-up — but that is not the only eye-catching action that will go down on April 20.

On the undercard, a super lightweight contender stakes his claim for a time to shine, while interim super flyweight gold is also on the line.

Here’s a breakdown of the entire action on the much-anticipated Haney vs. Garcia card.

Arnold Barboza Jr. faces Sean McComb in the co-main event.

Barboza (29-0) last fought in January, beating Xolisani Ndongeni, and offers up plenty of experience.

A 2015 European Games bronze medalist, McComb (18-1) turned pro in 2018. “The Public Nuisance” will be making his U.S. debut.

Also on the card is Bektemir Melikuziev vs. Pierre Dibombe.

A silver medalist in the 2016 Olympics, Melikuziev (13-1) often lives up to his nickname of “Bully”, and has won ten of his pro contests via knockout. He’s on a six-fight win streak, last beating Alantez Fox in December via TKO, and his latest test is former European light heavyweight champion Dibombe, from France, who last fought in June 2023 with a TKO win against Derrick Findley.

John Ramirez faces David Jimenez for the interim WBA super flyweight title.

“Scrappy” Ramirez holds plenty of potential in this one, after a big KO win — one of nine in his career so far — against Ronal Batista in October but Jimenez is no slouch, and the two-time bronze medalist at amateur level is on a three-fight win streak. He’s already fought, and won, twice in 2024 and is on a roll after beating Pablo Macario at bantamweight in February.

Charles “Bad News” Conwell faces Nathaniel Gallimore to open the PPV show, the pair fighting over ten rounds.

Undefeated Conwell (18-0) has former Team USA pedigree on his resume and will be looking to impress on his debut with Golden Boy against a fighter in Gallimore who is 1-4 in his last five fights — his last contest being a knockout loss in January 2023 against Serhii Bohachuk.

Haney vs. Garcia is set for April 20. The main card starts at 8 p.m. ET. Haney and Garcia should make their way to the ring around 11:30 p.m. ET, depending on how long the undercard fights last.

The fight will be broadcast across the DAZN platform.
